<Erimo town> Local museum “Horoizumi” and Suisan no Yakata

A place you can learn anything about
the fishing industry, history and culture of Erimo

It offers information on Erimo’s Konbu (Kelp) fishing, town’s main industry, biology of Konbu, nature, history, culture, and fishing industry. “Suisan no Yakata” has a display of Konbu specimen from all over Hokkaido, various sea creatures, and a recreated fisherman’s house from around 1955 ~ 1965. The local museum has fossilized mammoth molars, pictures by Ainu people, and descriptions of Saruru Sando (Mountain path). Entry is free.

A marine museum
with an exhibit on Hakkaku Oyakata
(Sumou stable master) from Hiroo

It has an exhibit on fish and sea creatures in waters around Hiroo, and descriptions on various fishing methods. Additionally, there is an exhibit on the 61st Yokozuna, “Hokutoumi (presently, Hakkaku Oyakata),” who is from Hiroo. The exhibit describes his life, from youth to the establishment of Hakkaku Beya (Sumou stable). Additionally, there is a memorial exhibit for Naoyuki Sakamoto, a mountain artist known for the art on the wrapping paper for “Rokkatei,” and letters from Ryoma Sakamoto, who is related to Naoyuki Sakamoto. The adjacent Kyodo Bunka Hozon Denshu Kan (local cultural museum) displays things associated with the history and nature in Hiroo.
