Obihiro specialty “Butadon (Pork rice bowl)”
Obihiro’s specialty food, “Butadon,” was created with the flavors of Unadon (Grilled eel rice bowl) in mind, with readily available pork meat since the pioneering days, where the pork meat is flavored with a sweet and salty soy sauce based sauce and placed over a bowl of rice. It has been loved by the locals since it first appeared at a restaurant by the Obihiro Station in 1933. It gained a national recognition, and there are many popular restaurants with long lines.

A forest carrying a dream of Rokkatei,

At Rokka no Mori, located at the southern part of Hokkaido Garden Path connecting Asahikawa, Furano, and Tokachi, Tokachi Rokka (Gentiana triflora, Sweetbrier, Trillium camschatcense, Erythronium japonicum, Caltha palustris, and Glaucidium) grows seasonally on 100,000㎡ of space. This hot spring stands isolated on the Pacific Ocean coast in Taiki. It is known as the only place in Tokachi, where you have the view of the ocean from the bathtub. The source of dark brown water is a salty cold spring. The water contains high levels of iodine, a rarity in Japan, and has anti-microbial effects. While there is no outdoor bath, there is a terrace to step outside and admire the view of the Pacific Ocean. For lodging, use “Bansei no Yado” next door.

A road that connects Hiroo and Urakawa on the National Highway 236. It is amazing during the fall foliage. In particular, “Nozuka Tunnel” area is known as a great photo spot for foliage.Taking a break at the Suimei Bridge Park, known for its water, is highly recommended.

A mountain where alpine plants can be enjoyed for the longest time in Japan
Look at the Pacific Ocean from the southern most tip of Hidaka Mountains
Located on the southern most tip of Hidaka Mountains, Mount Apoi has been declared a UNESCO Global Geopark. While it is only 810m tall, due to the thick fog from the ocean, and a distinctive geological feature known as “Horoman Peridotite,” it is a treasury of unique and valuable species of alpine plants. You can find over 80 kinds of plants including Callianthemum miyabeanum and Potentilla matsumurae. The flowers are in season between mid-April and late October.
